Safety regulations and the need for a lighter more fuel efficient vehicle have had a dramatic impact on the vehicle public safety agencies and first responders are finding at the scenes of motor vehicle accidents.  Side impact protection and the increased use of advanced high strength steels for vehicle construction are improving the protection of the occupants.  Alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles are no longer a rarity on the rescue scene. Rescuers are discovering that the tools and techniques used to perform vehicle extrication on older vehicles are not effective on the vehicles of today.  Our mission remains the same but as vehicles evolve so must our knowledge and skills.   The methods used to safely perform the mission of extricating, packaging and removal of the patient involved in a vehicle accident have been quietly changing and fire departments and other first responder agencies must train in new methods and technology to assure success on the accident scene.
